Helix people searching for a new home stumble upon a ring world made by aliens and inhabited by (friendly and stranded) Ousters. The Ousters are threatened by some huge machine that attacks the ring world every few years. Helix people decide to try to help and find out where the machine comes from and what its exact orders are. |

Typical Simmons. A lot of decorative (at times annoyingly long) writing with some quasi-religious undertones. The story itself unfolds quite well, but its resolve is utterly unbelievable ("it has no cameras") which really is a bitter pill for an otherwise fine short story. |
