A collection of nine short stories. "Missile Gap", "A Colder War", and "Palimpsest" I found very good.
"Missile Gap" is about humankind suddenly transferred to a vast disc, waking up thousands of years later, and struggling to find out who did that why.
"A Colder War" has a bit of Laundry feeling to it but isn't from the Laundry universe. It also got a much more depressing feeling to it.
"Palimpsest" really should be extended into a novel, but time travel mechanics should be explained better then. The way it is, while the story reads very well, many things feel unfinished and unclear to start with (which is frequently the case with Stross stories though).
I had high expectations of "Unwirer" but the story's political point and the hurried writing style spoiled the story for me. A bit less wouldn't have hurt. |
