Starts strong, fizzles out a bit. Good stories: Malak by Peter Watts (intelligent autonomous weapon is given a simple conscience. Also conveys an interesting message). Laika's Ghost by Karl Schroeder (Gennady trying to save the world from homemade WMDs again). The Server And The Dragon by Hannu Rajaniemi (lonely space outpost AI gets a visit). Bit Rot by Charles Stross (Space Robot Zombies for real!). Creatures With Wings by Kathleen Ann Goonan (that's mostly a long buildup for a quite simple joke though). Then six so-so stories. Somewhat good again: The Birds and the Bees and the Gasoline Trees by John Barnes (science ship investigates giant algae growth and discovers more advanced things). |
